At the invitation of the government of China, Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands visited the country from 24 to 28 November in her capacity as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA).
The Special Advocate met with a wide range of government interlocutors, financial sector and technology-based institutions, and many other partners to start a broad-based dialogue as China embarks upon its next phase of deepening financial inclusion in line with official government policy.
“China has the world’s largest mobile network operators and the fastest-growing e-commerce market. Thanks to companies such as Tencent, Alibaba, and China Mobile, the potential growth of online financial services, targeting especially the excluded and productive segments of society, is enormous,” said Queen Máxima in a speech at Beijing University’s National School of Development. “In fact, the eyes of the world are today on China to see what the future has in store as your country becomes a world leader in digital financial inclusion.”
